Preparation and Handling

Preparation and Handling

  • Handling raw food for your pet should follow the same procedures as handling food for yourself. Wash your hands after handling raw meat before touching anything else. Keep your kitchen counters, sink and cutting boards clean by disinfecting with an appropriate cleaner after being touched by meat or poultry. Straight 5% solution of vinegar or one teaspoon household bleach in one quart warm water can be used to sanitize.
  • Bacteria do not multiply when frozen and may decrease somewhat in population due to freezing.
  • When frozen meat begins to thaw any bacteria that may have been present prior to freezing can begin to multiply again as the temperature increases their growth range at approximately -7C (20F).
  • Bacteria multiplication increases at temperatures of -1C (30F). We recommend thawing frozen meat products in the refrigerator or in cold water. If you choose to defrost meat at room temperature, feed it as soon as the meat is thawed.
  • Do not refreeze meat once it is thawed to room temperature.
  • If your dog or cat does not eat the entire meal, discard or refrigerate leftovers immediately.
  • Wash all pet dishes with hot, soapy water or in a dishwasher. Stainless steel, ceramic or glass bowls are recommended.
